Plastic surgery is one or more procedures designed to change your appearance. From breast augmentation to tummy tucks (Abdominoplasty) and ear surgery, plastic surgery can alter your physique to reflect who you are as a person. Because for some, their body image is inextricably linked to who they are as a person. And plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery can help them achieve that.
Just what plastic surgery can do for you largely depends on your body type, age, and desired outcome. Having realistic expectations of what surgery can achieve is a necessary part of any successful result.
Why get plastic surgery?
People get plastic surgery for very different reasons. However, all the reasons why you would get plastic surgery can be broken up into two categories:
1. Reconstructive Surgery
Breast reconstructive surgery can return a sense of femininity to women who have battled breast cancer, breast or genetic defects. Breast reconstruction is complex. During breast reconstructive surgery the surgeon will rebuild your breast shape using a breast implant, a flap of tissue from another part of your body, or a combination of both. While some women are happy to live with their post-mastectomy shape, plastic surgery offers others the option to restore their feminine silhouette.
2. Cosmetic Surgery
There are two main reasons people choose to get cosmetic plastic surgery: the first is significant weight loss. After extensive weight loss, a lot of the skin doesn’t shrink. Removing this excess skin can correct the damage caused by obesity.
The second reason for cosmetic plastic surgery is more contentious. And it’s probably the biggest reason people get surgery: the reason is cosmetic enhancements. Although it would probably be better described as self-image. When people undergo cosmetic surgery to improve something they don’t like about themselves, they’re likely to feel like they have been able to achieve their aesthetic goals afterwards. This may result in a better quality of life as their focus is no longer on their insecurities.
Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder?
One of the worst possible reasons to consider undergoing plastic surgery is because someone else thinks you should change how you look. Because let’s face it: beauty is in the eye of the beholder is a cliché. And one which doesn’t take into consideration how important self-image is.
The only reason you should get plastic surgery is because you want it for you.
