Implant Removal and Lift Before and After Photos by Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Doyle

Breast implant removal with a lift is a viable option for women who want to remove their implants and have poor skin elasticity. It’s also a good option for women requiring removal of large implants. Breast implant removal and lift surgery is a popular procedure for women who choose to remove their breast implants, as this can correct any stretching of skin that took place due to the implants.

As shown above in Dr Doyle’s breast implant removal and breast lift before and after photos, this procedure helps you to return to your original, perky breast shape.

What to Look for In Before and After Plastic Surgery Images

It’s important to know what to look for when reviewing before and after cosmetic surgery images. Patient photo galleries can help you to identify a plastic surgeon’s skill and experience. It can also help you understand the results you might expect from this surgeon. To make the most out of your gallery viewing, here are some tips on what to look for:

1. Search for “before” images that look similar to you

Comparing someone else’s pre and post-surgery images won’t work if they had much smaller or larger implants or perkier or saggier breasts to start with. The results of implant removal surgery with a lift depend on the amount of breast tissue you had before your initial breast augmentation surgery and whether you have put on any weight since your first surgery.

By searching for patient photos with a similar breast shape and size to you, you can begin to compile your favourite after images.  Take note of patients with similar concerns to you and assess whether you would be satisfied with their post-surgery results. This will also help you to gain an appreciation of what is realistic for your body shape.

2. Look for strategically placed scars

When you are looking at each surgeon’s before and after real patient galleries, note what the patients’ scars look like – particularly their size and location. While variation is expected, most patients’ scars should be difficult to detect. An experienced plastic surgeon will place incisions in the natural folds of the skin or where they can be easily concealed by clothing.

Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Doyle prefers to explant breasts using an En Bloc method, meaning the breast and the surrounding scar tissue are removed together. The scar for this procedure is usually positioned around the nipple and down the middle of the breast. This is called a ‘lollipop’ incision.

3. Learn to recognize new vs. final results

Some cosmetic surgeons take “after” photos sooner than others—sometimes as soon as a month or two after surgery. Unfortunately, these early after pictures can give the impression of subpar results. Some signs of too-fresh results include:

  • Conspicuous scars that are still bright pink or red
  • Visible swelling, skin discolouration, or asymmetry

If you like much of that surgeon’s work, but notice that many before and after photos look like they may be “too fresh,” ask the surgeon when the patients’ photos were taken. In general, “after” photos were taken 6 months or more after surgery will give you the best indication of how a patient’s final results will look.

4. Ask to view before and after photos during your consultation too

Many patients have great surgical results and are happy to show them, they just prefer that they are not posted on the internet. So, as well as viewing before and after explant photos online, ask to view real patients before and after image galleries during your plastic surgery consultation too.

Breast Implant Removal with a Lift Recovery

You’ll likely need 2-3 weeks off work following breast implant removal and breast lift to ensure a quality recovery.  Dr Doyle will provide you with post-operative care instructions which you should follow EXACTLY to ensure you are not straining your wounds.

You should also follow Dr Doyle’s best practice cosmetic surgery recovery tips, which include an adequate wound healing diet and the use of supplements. It’s important to do your research before undergoing surgery so that you know what’s normal and what’s not with your recovery. You should know when to get into contact with Dr Doyle should a problem arise.

What Are The Risks Involved with Explant Surgery?

Over the years, surgical techniques have advanced to a point where they are quite secure, provided they are performed by a qualified surgeon in an approved hospital. Dr Doyle performs all major surgery at John Flynn Private Hospital near the Coolangatta airport.

However, there are risks associated with every form of invasive surgery. When it comes to surgery, you should be aware of all the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. With the appropriate planning and preparation, these risks can be minimised.

Potential risks related to explant surgery include numbness and scarring. Dr Doyle will ensure that you are fully aware of any potential risks and complications prior to your procedure. With the help of proven surgical techniques and by following the necessary aftercare instructions, there’s no reason why risks should be a cause for concern. Smoking will increase the risk of complications dramatically.

These complications can mostly be avoided by following Dr Doyle’s strict post-operative instructions. Download our procedure guide or read our General Risks of Surgery page to learn more.

Breast Implant Removal and Breast Lift Pricing

How Much Does a Breast Explant Cost on the Gold Coast? Cosmetic Surgery Prices and Fees

Since every patient has different requirements, the cost of breast implant removal surgery combined with a breast lift will differ too. Some of the elements that are included in the final cost include Dr Doyle’s fee as well as the hospital and anaesthetist fees.

When performed as a cosmetic procedure, implant removal won’t attract a Medicare rebate. However, your breast implant removal surgery may have a Medicare rebate if it has become medically necessary for the implant to be removed due to cancer risk or other medical conditions. There are eligibility criteria set by Medicare that needs to be met for your breast implant removal surgery to be considered medically necessary.

En Bloc Breast Implant Removal and Lift FAQs

How can I tell if the patient’s results are good if the Before and After images are bad?

Posture, poses, lighting, shading and camera distance are all elements that affect the outcome of before and after pics. If you take a closer look, you may notice the patient is slightly hunched forward in the after picture, the camera is closer/further away, or the angle of the image is different.

Once you can recognise these things, you can become an expert at examining real patients before and after photos regardless of how the images are taken.

How are breast implants removed?

Dr Doyle removes implants with both the implant and the surrounding capsule from the breast. This is called the En Bloc technique and is done to prevent any silicone (if the implants are ruptured) from leaking into the body.

What happens when you remove your breast implants?

Breast implants add fullness to your breasts. Removing the implants returns your breasts to their original shape however they may have more sag due to the skin being stretched by the implant. This is why breast lift is a good combination.

How will the breast look after removal with lift surgery?

Immediately after your surgery, your breasts may appear ‘deflated’. More often than not, your breasts will regain their volume over the following weeks.

Is a breast lift necessary after implant removal?

Not all women need to have a breast lift after explant surgery, though many do. Breast implant removal with breast lift surgery is a popular procedure for women with poor skin elasticity or women requiring the removal of large implants.

Mastopexy can be performed along with breast removal surgery in the same procedure. Dr Doyle’s preference is to do the removal and lift at the same time.

When should you have breast implants removed?

Breast implants are not lifelong devices. Typically breast implants last between 10 and 25 years but some women may need to have them removed or replaced sooner.

If your implant has ruptured or is causing capsular contracture, this can cause discomfort, pain and give rise to health concerns. If these complications do occur, it’s best to get your implants assessed for removal. Other reasons for removal include a BIA-ALCL diagnosis or breast implant illness.

What are the chances of getting breast implant illness?

There isn’t much definitive research into breast implant illness. One study, published in 2018, followed nearly 100,000 women with implants and found they were eight times more likely than the general female population to develop an autoimmune disorder. This is often referred to as breast implant illness.

What are the chances of getting BIA-ALCL?

BIA-ALCL (Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma) is a lymphoma that grows in the capsule surrounding a textured breast implant. This does not occur in patients with smooth implants. It is an uncommon cancer and presents with swelling of one breast due to fluid around the implant. The risk depends on the implant used and how textured the surface of the implant is.  The risk varies from 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 86,000. When a specialist plastic surgeon is able to diagnose BIA-ALCL early, they will suggest the removal of the implant and the scar tissue around it.
