Implant Removal and Lift Before and After Photos by Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Doyle
Breast implant removal with a lift is a surgery option for women who want to remove their breast implants and have excess skin elasticity. It’s also a surgery option for women requiring the removal of large breast implants. Breast implant removal and breast lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure for women who choose to remove their breast implants, this can also address the stretched skin, which may have occurred due to the excess volume of the breast implants.
As shown above in Dr Doyle’s breast implant removal and breast lift before and after photos, this procedure can assist with breast implant removal and your breasts returning to your original breast size.
What to Look for In ‘Before’ and ‘After’ Plastic Surgery Photos
It’s important to know what to look for when reviewing ‘before’ and ‘after’ cosmetic surgery photos. Patient photo galleries can help you to identify a plastic surgeon’s skill and experience. It can also help you understand the results you may expect from a surgeon. To make the most out of your gallery viewing, here are some tips on what to look for:
1. Search for ‘Before’ Photos That Look Similar To You Breasts
Comparing someone else’s pre and post-surgery photos won’t be suitable if they had much smaller or larger implants or higher or lower breasts to start with. The results of implant removal surgery with a lift depend on the amount of breast tissue you had before your initial breast augmentation surgery and whether you have put on any weight since your first surgery was completed.
By searching for patient photos with a similar breast shape and size, you can begin compiling your preferred ‘after’ surgery photos. Take note of patients with similar features and assess whether you would be content with their post-surgery results. This will also help you to gain an understanding of what is realistic for your body shape.
2. Look for Strategically Placed Scars
When you are looking at each surgeon’s ‘before’ and ‘after’ real patient photo galleries, please note what the patients’ scars look like, particularly their size and location. While variation is expected, an experienced specialist plastic surgeon is trained to place incisions in the natural folds of the skin, or where they can be concealed by clothing.
Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Doyle prefers to explant breasts using an En Bloc surgical technique, meaning the breast and the surrounding scar tissue are removed together. The scar for this procedure is generally positioned around the nipple and down the middle of the breast. This is known as a ‘lollipop’ incision.
3. Learn to Recognise ‘New vs. Final Results
Some surgeons take ‘after’ photos sooner than others, sometimes as soon as 4 – 6 weeks post-surgery. These early-after photos can give the impression of subpar results. Some signs of ‘too-fresh’ results include:
- Conspicuous scars that are still bright pink or red
- Visible swelling, skin discolouration, or asymmetry
If you like much of that surgeon’s surgery work, but notice that many ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos look like they may be ‘too fresh’, ask the surgeon when the patients’ photos were taken. In general, ‘after’ photos taken 6 months or more following surgery will give you the best indication of how a patient’s final results will appear.
4. Ask to View ‘Before’ and ‘After’ Photos During Your Consultation
Many patients have surgical results and are happy to show them, although, they prefer that they are not posted on the internet. Therefore, as well as viewing ‘before’ and ‘after’ breast explant photos online, ask to view real patients ‘before’ and ‘after’ photo galleries during your plastic surgery consultation too.

Specialist Plastic surgeon Dr Mark Doyle will provide you with post-operative care instructions that you should follow precisely, to ensure you are not straining your wounds.
You should also follow Dr Doyle’s best practice cosmetic surgery recovery tips, which include an adequate wound-healing diet and more information about the use of supplements. What Are The Risks Involved with Explant Surgery?
Over the years, surgical techniques have advanced, and risks have become lower, with surgery performed by a qualified plastic surgeon in an approved hospital. Dr Doyle is a specialist plastic surgeon and performs all surgeries at John Flynn Private Hospital near the Gold Coast airport.
However, there are risks associated with every form of invasive surgery. When it comes to surgery, you should be aware of all the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. With the appropriate planning and preparation, these risks can be minimised.
Some of the potential risks related to explant surgery include numbness and scarring. Dr Doyle will ensure that you are fully aware of any potential risks and complications before your procedure. With the help of proven surgical techniques and by following the necessary aftercare instructions. Please note, that smoking will increase the risk of complications dramatically.
These complications can be minimised by following Dr Doyle’s strict post-operative instructions. Download our procedure guide or read our General Risks of Surgery page to learn more.

En Bloc Breast Implant Removal and Breast Lift FAQ’s
How Can I Tell If A Patient’s Results Are Good If The Before’ and ‘After’ Photos Are Not Clear?
Lighting, posture, poses, shading and camera distance are all elements that can affect the outcome of ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos. If you take a closer look, you may notice the patient is slightly hunched forward in the after picture, the camera is closer/further away, or the angle of the photos is different.
Once you can recognise these differences, you can become an expert at examining real patients ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos regardless of how the photos are taken.
How Are Breast Implants Removed?
Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Doyle removes breast implants with both the implant and the surrounding capsule (scar tissue) from the breast. This is called the En Bloc technique and is done to prevent any breast implant silicone (if the implants are ruptured) from leaking into the body.
What Happens When You Remove Your Breast Implants?
Breast implants add volume to your breasts. By removing the breast implants, your breasts will generally return to their original shape and size, however, they may have more skin laxity or excess skin due to the skin being stretched by the breast implant. This is why a breast lift may be recommended by your surgeon.
How Will The Breast Look After Removal With Breast Lift Surgery?
Immediately following your surgery, your breasts may appear to have excess skin laxity, in some cases, your breasts may regain volume over the weeks following your surgery.
Is A Breast Lift Necessary After Implant Removal?
Not all women are recommended to have a breast lift with breast explant surgery, although many choose to. Breast implant removal with breast lift surgery is recommended for women with excess skin elasticity or women requiring the removal of large breast implants.
Mastopexy can be performed along with breast removal surgery in the same procedure or within individual surgeries. Dr Doyle’s preference is to do the removal and lift at the same time, for optimal wound healing.
When Should You Have Breast Implants Removed?
Breast implants are not recommended as lifelong devices. Generally, breast implants last between 10 -25 years, although some women may need to have them removed or replaced sooner, due to health concerns.
If your implant has ruptured or is causing capsular contracture, this can cause discomfort, and pain and give rise to health concerns. If these complications do occur, it’s best to get your implants assessed for removal. Other reasons for removal include a Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) diagnosis or breast implant illness.
What Are The Chances of Getting Breast Implant Illness?
There isn’t a lot of definitive research into breast implant illness. One study, published in 2018, followed nearly 100,000 women with implants and found they were eight times more likely than the general female population to develop an autoimmune disorder. This is often referred to as ‘breast implant illness’.
What are the chances of getting BIA-ALCL?
Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma BIA-ALCL is a type of lymphoma that grows in the capsule surrounding a textured breast implant. Please note, that there is no research to suggest that this occurs in patients with smooth implants. It is a rare cancer, which generally presents with swelling of one breast, due to fluid around the breast implant. The risk depends on the breast implant used and how textured the surface of the breast implant is. The risk varies from 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 86,000. When a specialist plastic surgeon can diagnose BIA-ALCL early, they will suggest the removal of the implant and the scar tissue around it.
