A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to increase the size and adjust the shape of the breasts. It is a cosmetic surgery performed worldwide and may be considered by individuals seeking changes to their breast volume or symmetry.
Read on for more information on the types of implants used, the surgical process, and what to expect before and after the procedure.
Breast augmentation surgery involves the placement of implants to alter the size and shape of the breasts. It is often performed for those who feel their breasts are smaller than they would prefer, have lost volume over time, or wish to adjust proportions or symmetry. Implants are placed either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle, depending on the individual’s anatomy and preferences.
Breast implants come in different types, each having different characteristics in terms of how they feel and sit in the body. The most commonly used implants in Australia are silicone, gel implants. These come in round or anatomical (teardrop) shapes, with either smooth or textured surfaces.
At Gold Coast Plastic Surgery, only smooth silicone implants are used.
Silicone gel implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel. They are widely used in Australia and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. These implants tend to hold their shape well and are designed to offer a soft consistency similar to breast tissue.
Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile salt water. They are typically filled after being inserted into the body. Please note, that Dr Doyle no longer uses or recommends saline implants to his patients.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and takes around one to two hours. Incisions may be made in various locations, such as under the breast (inframammary fold), around the areola (periareolar), or through the armpit (transaxillary). Implants can be positioned either beneath the breast tissue or under the chest muscle, depending on individual anatomy and surgical goals.
During consultation, questions like ‘how long does breast augmentation last?’ can be discussed to help patients make informed decisions.
Preparation for breast augmentation may include a medical assessment, routine blood tests, and lifestyle adjustments (e.g. quitting smoking). Patients are advised to arrange for help during their recovery period and follow all pre-operative instructions provided by their surgeon.
Recovery after breast augmentation varies, but typically involves a few days of rest, followed by several weeks of swelling, bruising, and discomfort. A compression garment must be worn, and strenuous activity should be avoided. Most people can return to normal routine gradually, with guidance from their surgeon.
