What to Look for In Breast Augmentation Before and After Photos?

When reviewing before and after plastic surgery photos, knowing what you’re viewing is important. Before and after photos can help you to identify a surgeon’s skill and experience. To make the most out of a before and after photo gallery viewing, here are some tips to follow:

1. Search for ‘before’ Photos That Appear Similar to Your Breasts

It is not recommended to view and show your surgeon someone else’s breast augmentation photos if you have a completely different anatomy to this patient. By searching for patient photos with a similar breast shape and size to you, you can begin to compile your preferred ‘after’ photos. Please take note of patient which are similar to you and assess their post-surgery results. This can help identify whether or not your surgeon aligns with your surgery plan and surgery goals.

2. Look for Consistent, yet Varied Results

Skilled surgeons can adapt their surgical technique and outcome to complement each patient’s unique anatomy. When searching through breast before and after photos, look for results that appear symmetrical based on the individual patient’s features.

Search for variety in the results your surgeon can achieve. If all ‘after’ images look the same, it is also likely, that the surgeon’s technique, implant placement and implant shape and size aren’t varied. This is a sign that they may not be able to achieve your personalised surgery goals, rather they’ll aim for what they’re skilled at.

3. Improved or Maintained Breast Symmetry

Most patients have some organic variations in symmetry. Sometimes this is slight, and other times it is severe. A skilled Specialist Plastic Surgeon is trained to improve breast symmetry and the size and shape balance between the breasts.

4. Strategically Placed Breast Surgery Scars

When looking at each surgeon’s before and after galleries, note what the patients’ scars look like particularly their size and location. An experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeon is trained to place incisions in the natural folds of the skin or where they may be concealed by clothing.

5. Learn to Recognise New Vs. Final Results

Some surgeons take ‘after’ photos sooner than others, sometimes as soon as 4 – 8 weeks post-surgery. These early after pictures can give the impression of subpar results, even though the patient’s results are still healing. Some signs of news results include:

  • Conspicuous scars that are still bright pink or red
  • Breasts sit high on the chest following breast augmentation surgery
  • Visible swelling, skin discolouration, or asymmetry

If you like the majority of that surgeon’s photo gallery, but notice that many before and after photos look like they may be new surgery, ask the surgeon when the patients’ photos were taken. Generally, ‘after’ photos taken 6 months after surgery will give you the optimal indication of a patient’s final results.

6. Ask to View Before and After Photos During your Consultation

Many patients have great surgical results and are happy to show them to new patients in person, they just prefer that they are not posted on the internet. Therefore, as well as viewing before and after breast augmentation photos online, ask to view real patients before and after photos during your plastic surgery consultation.
